Take Me to Church

Rate this book
One year ago I walked away from everything I knew and all the lies I’d been told.
For the first time in my life I was free from the constraints put on me by power hungry men who twist faith and devotion into fear and control.
All to feed their own egos.
Now my sister’s ready to leave too, but the only one who can help me save her is a ghost from my past. One who’s haunted my thoughts more than I’d like to admit.
Christian was my older brother’s best friend. He saved me countless times when I was a little girl, protecting me from the wrath of my unpredictable father when everyone else in the house turned a blind eye.
Except Christian’s no longer the lanky teenage boy from my memories.
He’s older. Darker. Deadlier.
He’s changed in ways I’m only beginning to understand. Ways that make me desperate for his touch. Ways that make me worry he still sees me as that little girl instead of the grown woman I've become.
But one thing hasn’t changed.
Christian is still willing to do whatever it takes to keep me safe…
and he’s more than ready to prove it.

"I've been trained to jump when a man calls. Conditioned to act on their whims. But that stopped a year ago, and I have no intentions of starting back up."

A year ago Lydia Parks became free.
She no longer put her faith in men that controlled her. That twisted her fate and twisted her.
But now her sister needs help.
And she will do anything she can to make sure she frees her sister.
She just didn't know who she would meet along the way. But she didn't think it would be him

"Maybe Little Red Riding Hood didn't have it do bad after all. Especially if her wolf was anything like Christian."

Christian works in construction day-to-day.
But at night, he saves. He rescues.
So when Lydia Parks, a girl he has not seen in a long time shows up asking for help…
He will protect her. Just as he always has.
Even if she doesn't want his help.

"I protected her before and I'll do it again. Even if it means she hates me."

"And I'm definitely fucking chasing her. She's not going to be able to get rid of me."

I received an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ok. The best way for me to describe this book is "Country Dark Romance" and I am here for it!!
I ate it up people. It was so good!!

This is my first Janice Whiteaker book and I hate that I have not picked her up before because HOT DAMN.

This book fuelled my feminine rage and I loved it so much (you can see just how much from the playlist)

"Who put their hands on you, Lydia? I want names."

Lydia Parks escaped a bad situation a year ago. She is no longer leaving her life, her fate, up to the hands of men who want to ruin it.

"They don't realize, or more likely don't care, that my smiles are an act. A calculated and carefully curated façade, because I understand how they work and what they can accomplish."

But now her sister needs help. Her sister needs to escape and Lydia will do everything to help her. And when Christian, her brother's ex best friend hears this, he will stop at nothing to help her sister. He will stop at nothing to help Lydia.

"But I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. And if it means I have to hunt you down when you take off, then that's what I'll do."

"Whoever's touched her, I know I could do better. I could make her forget there was ever anyone but me."

I swear to you %8 into this book and I already had a full playlist. This is after I removed some, but still one of my favorites:

And you know I have to end with a little something sweet:

"What I want is for you to take your panties off so I can feel how wet you get when you dream of me."

And my favorite line:

"God help anyone who tries to take her from me. Because I will willingly go to the depths of hell to bring her back."

Book one in a new series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. This series is a spin-off of the author’s Lost Boys series. Though I have not read that series (yet), I had no problem reading and loving this book. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.
Lydia escaped the religious cult she was raised in a year ago. She has had a lot to learn about the real world and still maintains some of her innocence and naivety from her sheltered upbringing. She will do anything to get her sister out too. I loved this character. She was incredibly brave so many times. I love how she was able to push through her fears, her determination to succeed, and her willingness to do anything to save her sister. I understood her and the struggle to break free from so many of the oppressive things she had known.
Christian is an impressive hero. I love his fierce desire to right wrongs. I love that he has his friends and that they have their mission. He does his best to protect Lydia from the world and from himself. I appreciated that she was able to bring a softer side of him to the surface. I loved the passion he had for her along with some very tender feelings.
This was a steamy, low-angst, suspense romance that I struggled to put down. I loved the found family aspect of the book. I loved the teamwork between the men. I love how Lydia grows and blossoms with Christian. This book handles some heavy topics, and I thought it did it well. Readers will want to pay attention to the author’s trigger warnings prior to reading.
CW/TW: “This book contains topics some readers might find difficult to read or hear about. These include spousal abuse, religious abuse, discussions of in-marriage rape, violence, and murder. Please consider skipping this story if you are sensitive to any of these subjects.”
I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.

Tropes: dark romance, contemporary romantic suspense, brother’s best friend, age-gap, antihero, heroine in danger, touch her and die

One year ago, Lydia walked away from everything she knew and all the lies she'd been told. For the first time in her life, she was free from the constraints put on her by power-hungry men who twist faith and devotion into fear and control. All to feed their own egos. This was a rather entertaining, just-dark-enough read that was different from anything I'd read before. This was my first read by this author, and she has certainly peaked my interest in all her other work. Both Christian and Lydia had been raised in the same environment that favored the men but are now on the outside. I loved how they were brought back together, especially the secrets he had been keeping. I certainly recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

Can I just start by saying that I love the name of the book ❤️.
This is a beautifully written book. A story about Christian & Lydia who grew up in a religious cult. Christian gets out 1st. He meets 2 more guys ,Tate & Simon & on they go.
Lydia finally escapes & through the book you get an insight of her struggles , how to be normal, how to live a life without the constraints that were drilled into her.
For me Lydia absolutely made this entire book ❤️. Her journey, her doubts, her bravery. This girl.
Hats off to all involved in this book 👏. Not a single mistake, not a single editing issue, not a single thing.
Counting down the days for Piper & Tate's book. I reckon she will give him hell!!!

First, you don’t have to read the series before this one to know what you need to know. That said, I’m going to go back and read it because I WANT to know everything! But if you just want to meet Christian and Lydia here and join them on their journey toward healing and love, you’ll enjoy it just as much.

Christian may think he’s unworthy, but Lydia proves him oh so wrong. So many times. And he also proves to Lydia just how worthy and lovable and everything she was afraid she’ll never be she truly is. These two not only scorch the pages, they bring the perfect combination of vulnerability, heat, emotion, family by choice, and humor to the party with them. As long as Lydia survives. And her sister escapes. And Piper doesn’t burn too many balls, that is. But you’ll love the entire ride, from start to finish. Trust me. And then? Well, then we get ready for Piper to drive someone crazy like it’s her job…because I think it just might be!

I adore this series already and can’t wait for Tate and Simon to tell their tales. I already want more, and I just finished Christian and Lydia’s story, so I guess I’m a little impatient, but sometimes that’s how you know just how good a story is, right?

To start, I want to say that I have NOT yet read the Lost Boys series, so this was my introduction to that group. That being said, this is a complete standalone and I didn’t feel like I was missing any pertinent details. I definitely want to go back and read the previous series though.
Christian and Lydia have a history and shared childhood traumas, though their experiences are different. I love how Lydia worked so hard to get past her taught reactions, and learned to open up and be herself. Seeing it unfold was a beautiful thing. There are a lot of triggers in this story, as stated in the front of the book, but absolutely NO triggering behavior between the hero and heroine.
Overall, I read this story in one sitting, in a matter of hours, and wish it didn’t have to end.

I’m a mixed bag for this one if I’m honest. It had a good concept for a storyline, but it didn’t hit the mark for me. I felt like the MMC, Christian, didn’t have much dimension, but it was evident that the FMC, Lydia did. It was so clear that she was struggling with wanting to rescue her sister and also trying to find herself in the ‘real world’ after being brought up in a religious cult. Christian does have touch her and d¡e vibes, and you know ya girl is all about it. He protects her with such ferocity, physically and emotionally - that’s something I can appreciate. For me, the virgin heroine trope was off, as well. It’s marketed as a low-angst romantic suspense, and I guess that just didn’t make sense in my mind to put those together. It didn’t feel suspenseful to me, and that’s probably why I’m feeling up in the air because I wanted the suspense. I think if I went into this not expecting a suspense than I would have a different outlook.

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💫 (3.75)
Spice: 🌶️

Quote:
“Lydia might be just as sweet and soft as she ever was, but there’s a strength to her that is impossible to deny. And it’s going to be one hell of a problem.”

This is a romance between Christian and Lydia who both grew up in a religious cult and were able to run away/get out. Now, Lydia is coming to Christian for help to get her sister out, but she didn’t know that Christian was the man she was pointed to. A man who she adored from childhood, a man who would do anything to take care of her. Christian has a reputation of being morally grey, but has been trying to put that man to rest - but in walks Lydia.

Salvation in found family.

Lydia Parks freed herself from a religious cult and is now looking to get her sister out. She looks for help and it turns out a boy (now a man) from her childhood, Christian, is the one she approaches. Their reunion, while a shock doesn’t go as expected.

I was riveted to this story from the beginning of the spooky meet-up. I loved the way Janice Whiteaker built up the suspense, it was very Hitchcockian. You know something is going to happen, but the anticipation of the event kept the pages turning faster and faster. Her characters were well thought out and I was invested in their stories. Christian while ashamed of some of the things he’s done in his past is not afraid to repeat them to save Lydia and her sister. Lydia is stronger than she gives herself credit for. She has worked essentially by herself to overcome the restrictions and oppression of her former life. Both Christian and Lydia have many demons of their past to vanquish. The Sinners and Saints series is a spin-off of The Lost Boys series which I have not read yet, and did not need to in order to become fully immersed in this book. However, I will definitely be going back to get the stories of Christian’s brothers. Take Me to Church is a wonderful story of overcoming your past and moving into a new future full of possibilities with a found family. I received an arc of this book from Grey’s Promotions, and this is my honest review.

YES!!!!

This was such a good read!

Alana has escaped her old life, one where she is to be a good wife and have no say in anything or she will be condemned. When her sister reaches out to her saying she needs her help escaping from her husband and that life. Alana goes looking for someone to help her and runs into an old friend.

Christian can’t believe his childhood friend is back in his life and asking him to help her get her sister out of their old ways of living. He is having a hard time trying to figure out if he can help her or not because of some red tape.

Their connection to each other is beautiful. He is tying to let Alana have her own voice and continue to make her own choices, because of the way she grew up, but at the same time, wants to keep her for himself but wants to to make a decision to be with him too.
Oh I loved this couple so much!!!

I really enjoyed this book!

It was a great mix of action & tense moments along with the romance and the steam.

I thought the naivety of Lydia, especially surrounding the topic of sex was actually very accurate considering her upbringing & I liked that this was shown. Christian was really respectful despite desperately wanting her and this was top tier. Who doesn’t love a man willing to put his girls needs first 😍

I liked that the story got started right off the bat. Jumped straight in & then made for a compelling read which I finished in 2 sittings.

The female characters were all such strong, badass characters - even the side ones. And it really is great to read about woman who can stand on their own.

I am really looking forward to the next book because all the side characters really intrigued me & I want to know more about them!

This is a spin off series but I read it easily not having read the original series.

Touch her & 💀

I devoured this book! This is a spin off of another series - which I have not read (to be rectified asap), but I didn’t feel like I missed anything because of that.

I really loved Christian and Lydia and their dynamic. Christian was perfect for her and I loved how patient and gentle he was and how he made sure she was truly comfortable doing everything she wanted to do.

I know Lydia saw herself as week sometimes, but I found so much strength in her character not just for having escaped her cult life, but for doing everything she could to save her sister too. I loved when she stood up to others (especially men!) because it showed she had a back one despite how she was raised.

I loved the former cult life aspect because I’ve always been oddly fascinated by that. The plot in this was fast moving and kept me engaged. the sweet moments between Christian and Lydia were balanced with all the action. And I loved all the side characters as well and definitely hope we get a Piper book in the future 👀

Take Me to Church by Janice Whiteaker is the First book in the Sinners and Saints Series. This is the story of Christian and Lydia. Christian had saved Lydia when she was in a bad situation where she was raised in a cult like environment. Now Lydia needs his help again when her sister asked for help too. Enjoyed this book.

I've been in a book slump lately and this read definitely helped pull me right out if it. Once I got a few chapters in I couldn't put it down! I absolutely LOVE any story of a battered heroine who learns to hold her own - and it's even better when there's a MMC who's willing to burn the world down to help her achieve greatness (this book delivered on both fronts 😍)

After escaping from her cult, Lydia needs help to offer her sister the escape she so desperately needs, there's only one person for the job. Christian. Her older brothers former best friend. His original refusal to help Lydia leads her to a more dangerous fate, but when the lines between platonic and romantic become blurred who's going to end up hurt?

If you like an age gap romance with suspense and spice this is the one for you, the whole story is connected to another set of stories so I'd recommend reading those first to get the whole picture

Good morning, readers!
Today I'm bringing you a crazy wonderful book, that I loved madly and that is able to get under your skin like few others.
It's a very respectable #darkromance, with important contents and messages that people often tend to underestimate in a book of this genre. In outline we find the following tropes:
•• age-gap
•• brother’s bestfriend
•• touch her and d1e

As always you will find the synopsis by scrolling, so I won't dwell on it. But I really appreciated the choice of the background of both the main characters: a religious cult, where men reign supreme and women are relegated to background figures with no power over anything. But Lydia and Christian are different. She has an indomitable character, she is strong and she decides to escape from a harmful environment like that. He is a boy who ran away himself, unable to bear to behave as others would have expected of him, but still ending up in an equally difficult situation that made him tougher.

I particularly loved the desire for redemption and revenge that distinguish both. It is a story of strength, of love - towards oneself first and foremost but also towards those one cares about - and of freedom.
Lydia and Christian are also the symbol of a bond that can resist time, space but - above all - a reality that has tried to suffocate both them and their souls. They are proof that despite adversity you should never despair, but always fight for what you believe in and that there is always time to find your place in the world and there is always time to find the right person to fight with and grow.

There is certainly no shortage of scenes full of suspense, whether of a more psychological nature or action, with an alternation that entertains and never bores. And all of this is alternated in turn by more intense and profound moments of reflection, but which do not slow down the pace in the slightest and can make us who are reading think too.

It’s always a bit of a gamble reading a new author’s book, will it be a waste of my time? Will I engage with the characters? Will the storyline be fast-paced and absorbing? Does it matter that I haven’t read any of her previous books? I can resoundingly say… no, it definitely wasn’t a waste of my time, I liked the characters and they intrigued me from the get-go, the pace went smoothly and, yes, I was completely enmeshed in the world of Christian and Lydia. This is a complete standalone but I want to read more books by this author for sure.

The gradual buildup of the two lead character’s profiles enables readers to understand them better, to understand their fears and know their thoughts. Achieved also through a dual point of view telling of the story. I absolutely loved the connection between Christian and Lydia, their chemistry was amazing. Although Lydia had led a sheltered life and took her time reaching out to embrace all that her new life offered, she certainly took great strides in going ahead in her intimate life with Christian.

The family supporting Christian was another wonderful aspect of this story. Right throughout the book there were checks and balances, just what I love in a story. There were some fabulous secondary characters, especially Piper… what a feisty one she was with her stun gun. I can’t wait to read the next book, Tell Me, with Tate and Piper, it’s sure to be a blast.

Take Me to Church by Janice Whiteaker

Ok wow you guys this one was so emotional. Trust me once you get to know about what the religious cult put them through it’s going to be horrific and you will be sick but you will see just how strong Lydia is. This is Lydia and Christian’s journey and it is not an easy one but it is one you need to read. It is a book I highly recommend and one you must read.

🧡 Romantic Suspense
🧡 Brother’s Best Friend
🧡 Cult Upbringings
🧡 Touch her & ☠️ vibes
🧡 Found Family

The concept and storyline of this book was so interesting, and really kept me on my toes!! I loved all of the twists and turns, and felt like the pace was perfect.

Both the main and side characters were so well developed by Janice, that I really felt their bond as a group and with each other. I always love found family vibes, but this character development really made that trope shine.

The reuniting of Christian and Lydia was so well done. He was he older brother’s best friend years ago, but through their traumatic pasts, they were separated. The way they meet again, and the possessive and protective way Christian treats Lydia, is perfect.

While the suspense and storyline were front and centre, there was some spice. There were a few awkward moments that felt a little out of character for either, or both of the MCs. However, the rest of the spicy scenes were excellent. Christian was the most delicious combination of dominant and empowering, which was exactly what Lydia had wanted and needed.

All in all, this was an intriguing and suspenseful read, that’ll draw you right into each character’s life and story!

Thank you so much to Janice Whiteaker for the ARC opportunity!

Talk about a book hangover! The edgy feel of this story is different than any other book I’ve read by this author, and I love it! Right from the start, Janice created a feeling and image that set the tone. You feel the desperation and desire, not always sensual, of the characters. Her writing makes this work for readers of her Lost Boys series, as well as for new readers who read this as a standalone.
Take Me to Church stirred up a lifetime of emotions! I absolutely relate to Lydia! I grew up in a place and time with a repressive mindset. A few hours away were two communities where people live in an eerily similar environment to how Lydia grew up. Her inner monologues are spot on for what she’s gone through.
There’s a truth to Lydia’s character and how she reacts to situations. She often takes three steps forward in her growth, but then retreats. Suddenly, she gets herself back together and is on the path again. That is reality for so many of us. She reclaims herself and her fight to move forward.
In real-life, we most likely wouldn’t want a man like Christian, but oh my, he’s a swoon worthy man. His dark, broody and protective nature is a bit much at first, but it’s clear he’s been shaped by his past and he’s fighting for his “family”. He’s a man of conscience that hasn’t always had the luxury of living by the dictates of a conscience. Christian has worked hard to gain a better life. He rescues women in need to redeem his soul. Christian is a good man and Lydia makes him better. Lydia blossoms and finds her place in the world through Christian’s care, concern and respect.
At times they struggle because they are at two different places in their liberation from the life and control they grew up with, and the differences in how their respective genders were perceived. Ultimately, they both learn that it boils down to choice. Who do they want to be? No one has to settle for being what they’re not!
Janice uses anticipation at several points in the story. You want to know what’s next. Sometimes it’s not what you expect, but it keeps the story interesting. There’s a lot going on with characters, settings and backgrounds, but it all works because it supports Christian and Lydia’s thoughts and actions. Everything makes sense and it flows.
I completely took a chance with this ARC and it was worth it. This book is everything I thought I would never read, but I want more. Bring on the next book!

Christian and Lydia

This was a book I couldn’t put down. I loved the idea of two people who escaped a cult finding their way to each other, despite their 10 year age gap, and finding solace and peace in each other. I thought the plot was refreshing and interesting. There was never a dull moment and I loved that there was some humor thrown in to give some light to the story.

Lydia was such a strong character. Although she was a little naive, she had learned and adapted in the year since she escaped her old life. Christian constantly underestimated her because of their connection when she was a lot younger, but he not only helped her understand who she was, he also gave her the space to make her own choices. Lydia was wise beyond her years and that negated their age gap.

Christian was the epitome of a morally grey hero. He was wiling to do whatever it took to keep Lydia safe. I loved his protectiveness over Lydia. I loved seeing him grapple with the feelings he had for Lydia. This was definitely a slow burn and it was perfect for Lydia and Christian. Christian made sure he gave Lydia the reigns in everything they did, and still retained some control, but it was given, not taken.

I loved this story. I loved the secondary characters. Piper was the perfect best friend for Lydia. I’ll definitely be going back to read the Lost Boys series now!

DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved this story! It was intense, emotional, and so so steamy!! Christian and Lydia were perfection! I loved the history they had! I loved how Christian took care of and protected her, without smothering or making her feel less. I loved the freedom that Lydia found with Christian by her side.

This story was a lot to unpack for me personally. I come from a religious background and a lot of the restrictions that Lydia faced (esp. with the clothes and music) were restrictions I had as a kid.

I loved getting reacquainted with the other Lost Boys and their families, particularly Tate and Simon! I cannot wait for Tate and Piper’s story in Tell Me No Lies! Piper was a hysterical addition to this story, and her “meet cute” with Tate was absolute gold! I can’t wait to find out what is in store for Myra, Lydia’s sister! I am hoping for a Simon/Myra story though!

This story can be read as a standalone. It is the first in a three book spinoff series of the Lost Boys series, and you will meet most of those characters in this book but you do not need to read those books to understand what is happening. I do recommend that you at least put those books on your TBR because they are simply some of the best stories I have ever read!

Thank you Janice and Julie for the advance copy!

This was a really good read.

Lidia our FMC escaped from The Church compound she grew up in thus leaving her life behind. Then a year later she gets a message that he sister wants to leave as well and Lidia needs help freeing her sister. While looking for help she just happens to be lead to the boy whom was her proctor growing up. Yet, he's not the same boy from her childhood.

Christian was picked from The Church and pushed into the real world at a young age. Thus causing him to fall into the wrong crowd. Yet, he found a family worth fighting for. His need to help women escape from their abusive lives has created a "side" business between him and some of his brothers. Although he never imagined the little girl from back home would walk through his front door.

This was my first read by Janice and I was intrigued throughout the whole story. As we go along we a readers think one thing will happen but then we are directed in a different direction.

Definitely will be waiting to see how the rest of this series plays out!!

Format - E ARC

Rating- ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Spice- 🌶 🌶 🌶

Series- Sinners and Saints #1

Troupes- Childhood friends, age gap, protective alpha MMC, touch her and die, dirty talking hero

Representation-

CW- Religious cult, mentions of rape, on page murder

OK I was very on the fence with this one. I have a very hard time with the idea Religious cults and the abuse and misogyny that is ingrained into such things are a huge trigger for me. So I went into this one knowing I may not be able to finish it. I should have know that Janice wouldn’t write anything so vile I would want to DNF. In fact she does an excellent job depicting the awful while simultaneously squashing it with all the feminism and anti patriarchal awesomeness!

Christen is an interesting hero as he hasn’t always been on the right side of the law or things in general but he has always been protective of those he loves and he has since tried to live straight. Lydia as an abused Religious cult surviver could have easily been a bumbling annoying damsel in distress. But she’s not, she is innocent and still learning how the real world works but she’s strong and completely capable of taking care of herself.

These two together are like a chemical reaction, she makes his protective nature come out full force and he makes her feel things she never thought she would after the abuse she endured. For all my feminist thinking I am still a sucker for a dirty talking alpha hero who gets to her her first. It will always make my glasses steam and Janice does those Spicy times right!

So for all my waffling I did enjoy this one and will defiantly be reading the others, now that I have been introduced to all of Christens “Brothers” I need to know their HEAs!

First, I want to say thank you Janice for the ARC!

After leaving a life of twisted faith that was controlled by power hungry men, Lydia is finally on her own, free to do what she wants and be who she wants. But now that her sister is ready to leave that life behind too, Lydia has to seek the help of an unexpected ghost from her past. He’s haunted her thoughts for as long as she can remember, but he’s much different now. All grown up and dangerous. Nothing like the boy she used to know.

Christian always looked after his childhood best friends little sister, Lydia. Tried to shield her from the wrath of the men in her life who would always put her down. When he left his old life behind, he never thought he would see her again. Much less did he ever expect her to show up at his door looking for his help. He’s always protected her and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

I had such a fun time reading this and getting to experience Lydia & Christians story. It kept my attention and I really loved the characters. I felt a few parts could have been a bit longer, but overall it was a great read, 4 stars! I can’t wait to dive into Tate & Pipers story next!

“Nothing really makes a person bad, as long as their motives are good."

Sometimes we all just need the morally gray, the anti-hero and Christian is definitely that for Lydia.

They grew up together, Christian being best friends with her older brother. But their hometown is not a great place to grow up in and the people around them even worse, Christian always looked out for Lydia even then. So now that she needs help rescuing her sister, she knew that he was the best person to help her.

Growing up like she did, she thought being around Christian would be hard and uncomfortable. What surprised her is that she doesn’t seem to mind this “older, darker, and deadlier” version of him. If anything she’s even more attracted to him.

Lydia is such a strong heroine! Love her strength, courage and her heart. The things she’s been through, the trauma and to come out of it not jaded but hopeful is just amazing.

“Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you keep going anyway.”

And Christian, oh this man knows what he’s doing! Love the touch her and I’ll literally unalive you vibes. His protective and supportive nature plus his patience is what makes him perfect for Lydia! And the mouth on him!!! Ohmygoodness! 🔥

Be ready for some action, suspense and spice!!

I have never read anything by this author before, and I went in pretty blind - and I’m so glad I did. I really loved this book. It was suspenseful and intense, and at times had me on the edge of my seat. I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. Lydia is trying to help her sister get away from their controlling family so she can be free and she goes to Christian for help. Not knowing that he’s someone she grew up with. I think Christian was just as shocked to see Lydia, as she was, but both were happy they each got out. The tension between them was so strong. Lydia was brave and determined, I loved how no matter what she’s wasn’t going to give up on her sister. Christian was determined right from the second her saw Lydia again that he would do whatever it takes to help her. Such a roller coaster of emotions reading this story, especially when danger seems to find them more often than not. I loved the found family aspect of everything too, they were all so great. I already can’t wait for Piper and Tate’s book.

A year ago, Lydia Parks ran away from the religious cult she’d been raised in before her father could marry her off. Now her sister Myra wants to escape her abusive husband, and Lydia is looking for help. She runs into her former friend Christian who was also brought up in the cult but left fifteen years ago. He can help Myra, but will he be able to save the two sisters.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s so well-written and filled with great characters. The world building is good, and the relationships are strong. Yes, Christian is an alpha protector, but he’s also determined to let Lydia be in charge of her own choices. Lydia is strong after all she’s been through and isn’t afraid to fight. The relationship between Lydia and Christian is so sweet. Christian took care of Lydia when she was a little girl, now he’s taking care of her again. The side characters are fantastic, especially Piper who is a hoot!

I highly recommend Take Me to Church. Check your trigger warnings just in case. Read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

4/5 Stars
1.5/5 Spice

I enjoyed this book! The plot was interesting and kept me on my toes.

I really loved the FMC Lydia. I was drawn to her bravery, and I liked reading about how she overcame her horrible situation. She was under control for so long, and it took her a long time to realize she could do whatever she wanted.

Christian was a protector. When he got out of the horrible situation years before Lydia, he was completely on his own and did not-so-great things to keep himself fed and alive. When he realized that wasn't great, he and his "brothers" went down a different path to help people. When he sees Lydia again, he is immediately drawn to her and basically claims her. He wasn't sure he'd ever find happiness with someone, yet when Lydia came along, he knew she was the one he'd been waiting for.

Lydia and Christian are opposites, yet they came from the same kind of background. She doesn't know a lot about the "free" life, and Christian is so patient with her and shows her the ropes.
